Okay, I think I'm ready for DC!!!

Well, my marching band is leaving for Washington DC on Wednesday and I think I'm ready. Our town (and state) raised over $100,000 in a little under three weeks. So we don't have to pay anything but souvenirs. Awesome, huh?

I've got my plastic clarinet, my plastic mouthpiece, and my plastic reed (which btw is a Legere 4... I read somewhere on this forum that people usually go up a quarter size from Vandy... I went up a half size because it was all I could get my hands on on short notice). I'm also using a neckstrap, because I've got a nasty carpal tunnel issue.

Anyway, I can't believe that I am really going to be playing for the Prez!!! It's amazing to be playing at such a big gig! We'll also be playing at Union Station for our former governor, as he accepts his position on the Cabinet. It'll be fun!!!!!!!!!! In the parade, we're playing in the 4th Group (whatever that means). It's the last one and we're in with bands from the Armed Forces and Texas A and M. Luckily the horses are behind us. We were told that even if their is "dung" in our way, "WALK RIGHT THROUGH IT!" (So much for clean spats!)

On a side note, I'm a member of Academic Decathlon. You basically take tests all day for this activity. Well, at regionals, the only ribbons I got were a 2nd in Music (sacred music -- weird stuff) and a 1st in Speech. The speech I did on what music means to me and based it on the quote from Mr. Holland's Opus "Playing music is supposed to be fun. It's about heart, it's about feelings, moving people and something beautiful. And it's not about the notes on the page."

Anyway, DC, here I come!!!!!

Good luck with all your new "plastic." I'm sure our new prez will think it sounds just fine. Have fun and good clarineting in DCville.

Amanda,

With which group are you performing? You may have mentioned it before, and I just don't remember. I think everyone on the BBoard would love to look for you on TV or something! (not in a freaky stalker way, but rather a "Hey! I know her!" way if that makes any sense) :o) Have fun in DC! It's a great city!

Take long undies! Many years ago, I marched in Jimmy Carter's Inaugural parade with the University of Georgia band, and I've never been so cold in my life! I'm not sure I played many notes--my fingers and lips were frozen. Maybe it won't be that cold this time. Anyway, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Just don't be walking into any of those high chain link fences. Rubber or not it will still hurt jammed up your nose.
Have fun. Say hello to Al for me.

Wear warm socks -- preferably something wool or synthetic that keeps insulating even when wet. The weather predictors are forecasting rain on Saturday, highs in the 40s (that's the single digits in Celsius, for those of you in the rest of world). D.C. gets this nasty cold damp most winters that really refrigerates the toes. I hope you have fun -- this town is pretty, full of great buildings, and history. On Saturday, this inside-the-Beltway cynic is going to stay home and practice her newly repaired bass clarinet -- ooh baby, what a couple of new & realigned pads can do!
