Sorry for posting so much mouthpieces but I have a troubling situation. I can deceide between the M13 or the M13 Lyre. Is it pronounced Lie-Re or Leer, Lie-air? I could never get that straight. The M13 has the Longer facing than the M13 Lyre and the M13 Lyre has the slightly bigger tip opening. I play level 3 music and pratice 45 min almost every day. I use 3 1/2 Grand Concert Select Traditional, Bundy Resonite Clarinet, and a Rovner Dark Ligiture. The mouthpiece I am using right now is the Selmer Goldentone #2. Please help me deciede between the two and share your own experiences with these mouthpieces.

Also if you could tell me what the tip opening and the facing has to to with the tone, volume, pitce, response etc. I have a rough idea but not fully educated yet.

John-Bruce Yeh (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) was playing an M-13 Lyre andYamaha clarinets the last time I heard him play in Chicago. I am using a new Gregory Smith Chedeville model 1* which I find to be exceptional in tone quality and response. You will find more info about his mps in the Sneezy Sponsers. Good luck in our choice, a good mouthpiece is more important than a good clarinet. Good clarineting.

I use Grand Concert Select No. 3 on both my M13 and M13 Lyre. Today (humidity over 90% in Hong Kong), I find that with the same reed, M13 Lyre is working fine in an open area while M13 is working fine in a small room. Alternatively, M13 Lyre makes the reed to feel too hard in a small room but M13 makes the reed too soft in an open area. Besides, I am unable to tell any other signficiant difference.

I use to use a M13 when I was in High School for a short time. I found that I had a hard time articulation and controlling it. I had to use one in an unfortunate circumstance at the begining of this year for seating auditions at school. My mouthpiece chiped while I was cleaning it one night and had to go back to that mouthpiece. I am not a big fan of that mouthpiece. I had coffee with Anthony Giggliotti before my seating audition. I brought up this and he told me a few interesting things. He told me a lot of the Curtis students had to try several in order to make them work. I guess Montarano is pushing that mouthpiece on his students. I have heard the new associate principle of the cincinatti symphony Anthony McGill play the Mozart Clarinet concerto. He sounds great and I know he uses a vandoren M13 mouthpiece or something in that M series. If you like the mouthpiece, make sure you try others because each mouthpiece does play different. In the end, we can't hear how you sound. We may be able to offer you bits of advice, but you need to decide for yourself which one sounds better to you. Don't forget that all mouthpieces differ - even those of the same model.
It would be good if you could get your teacher to hear them. Trust your own ears!
