Hi all,
A colleague of mine has asked me to evaluate a clarinet of his which he wants to sell. I have played it a few times, and I'm quite shocked
that many notes are still between 10 and 20 cents flat after being warmed up.
It hasn't been played much in the last few years so I'm wondering if continued playing would allow it to 'open up' and be less flat. It's one of the (older I think) Jupiter intermediate grenadilla models.
I've been using the same clarinet for several years so I don't know what happens with unplayed instruments. I've played professionally for the last few years so I'm quite sure I'm not the problem.
Is this a common issue with Jupiter instruments?

Surprising, as Jupiter instruments are made to tune at 442. If your embouchre is correct, then you need to consider a shorter barrel.

Well that's very surprising - even with a 65 it's still very out of tune, with the tendency always towards flatness. Particularly extreme on throat f and corresponding high clarion c

You say many notes are flat but not all. Maybe it just needs a service - possibly some tone holes are partially block or some keys not opening the correct amount.

I've found that the student and intermediate model clarinet makers outside of the big four often have intonation issues, even with a quality mouthpiece, when the intonation issues do not occur on an instrument from the big four. I find most of these instruments are somewhat flat in pitch, though one maker, an instrument a student had I taught several years ago, was extremely sharp. (after showing her parents the intonation issues, they selected with me a very nice Noblet 40 at the main woodwind shop here). With most of these instruments, the thumb rest is way too small, though I do like how some of these models have incorporated a neck strap ring. I've had a few experiences of these instruments not being able to be fitted with a normal mouthpiece, and that you have to use the one that comes with the instrument. And other posters have mentioned that sometimes using a barrel other than one that came with the instrument does not fit.
