Stanley Hasty is a fantastic clarinetist and teacher. His fame as a performer is not as widely known because while with the Pittsburg Symphony, he decided to teach at the Eastman School of Music and play Principal Clarinet with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He chose teaching over fame and of course built a fabulous reputation as a producer of major orchestral and university teachers , too numerous to list here. I was one of the lucky ones who studied with him during the mid to late 1960's. He could make a student with limited talent, play like an artist. I will be forever indebted to him for his beautiful playing, magnificent teaching and demanding, yet fair approach to his students. He was extremely clear with his teaching ideas, but if a student did not react quickly, he was know to shout NO! often during lessons. During a lesson, he suggested several changes to my preparation of a Rose Etude, which I luckily was able to quickly do. He was momentarily impressed, an complimented me on my quick musical adjustments. He then promptly stated: Chester, you adjusted so quickly to my suggestions! However, I do wonder how much you are able to remember them during the week!---I loved studying with him and use his clarinet techniques to this day with great humility!
