 Lisa Jager/Ramani

A little less than two years ago, Lisa Jager, then a local high school senior, was guest clarinet soloist for the spring concert of the Indianapolis Municipal Band, which I play bass clarinet with. Among the pieces she soloed on was "Flight of the Bumblebee."

Last night, I attended an Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Pops concert with the renowned Erich Kunzel conducting. And who was guest clarinet soloist for the concert? Lisa Ramani, a.k.a. Lisa Jager. (The newspaper listed her as Lisa Jager, but the program listed her and Maestro Kunzel introduced her as Lisa Ramani.) She is now a 19-year-old sophomore at Princeton. She played "Flight of the Bumblebee," Leroy Anderson's "Clarinet Candy" and Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine," all to the great appreciation of the audience. Granted, these are showy pieces, but I think she did very well. I also appreciated that her facial expressions were not those of a prima donna, but those of a teenager perhaps slightly embarrassed, although appreciative, of the audience's adulation with some relief of having performed successfully thrown in. I am not sure if this weekend's concerts were unusual to what she is doing or, for example, if Maestro Kunzel has used her with the Cincinnati Pops as well. He frequently calls on outstanding university students to accompany his performances, most notably vocalists from the University of Indiana.

I'm not sure why I posted this other than to say that you might look for her in the future and for me to brag that "I accompanied her when..."
