Hi I recently broke my regular B40 mouthpiece and I"m looking to buy a new one. I'm a highschooler and I'm playing on vandoren blue box 3 1/2 reeds. My section leader recommended the 5RV while my teacher recommended I get the regular B40 with profile 88.
I'm thinking about ordering the mouthpiece off wwbw, but I'm confused about the profile 88 thing. Is the "Vandoren B40 Series Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece" 440 already? .. or if I get the B40 Profile 88 , it is tuned to 440?
Also, I'm open to opinions on the B40 versus the 5RV.
Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!

This page on the Vandoren site gives you some info about the different mouthpieces: http://www.vandoren.fr/en/mentonniere.html Switching to a different mouthpiece might require a change in reeds.

If it says "13 series" then it is tuned to 440. Otherwise it's 442 (which is probably what you had before).
If you really like the B40, just order a few and send back the ones you don't want.
To see if you like a 5RV, try the section leader's (if it's safe to assume he's recommending a 5RV because that's what he uses).
If there is a music store that has a decent stock, you can try several vandorens and order 3 or 4 of the model that you like the best (to get a better price and selection than buying at the shop).
My personal preference is the 5RV or 5RV lyre over the B40. They're more moderate facings that will generally make your life easier than the more open B40.

The B40 and 5RV (both Lyre and not) are different and you need to try to see which one you like better. If you try both with the same reed strength, most likely at least one of them won't feel very good.
You can pretty much ignore the 13 plays 440, the non 13 plays something else. If you feel a regular Vandoren is a little sharp, try a 13. If a 13 feels a little flat, try a regular one. Only with a specific clarinet and player a mouthpiece would have a certain pitch.

I think you should try B45 or B45 LyreProfile 88. The B45 has a similar tip opening and facing length to the B40, but the way it conducts the air is somewhat better in my opinion. I use a B45 lyre 88 with Vd 3 traditional.
