I caught the first set of the Eddie Daniels performance at Blues Alley in Washington D.C. last night, the first night of a 3-night appearance. While he played tenor sax for nearly half the set, when he did play the clarinet his skills were readily apparent. His sound was less breathy than on his recent duet recording with Roger Kellaway, "A duet of one". His low notes were nice and fat. Improvisations featured frequent fast runs and arpeggios executed with ease. The quartet, co-lead by pianist Bob James and featuring James Genus on bass and Peter Erskine on drums, presented a nice set of modern mainstream jazz. Eddie played a Backun clarinet and he switched barrels during the set. He used a two-microphone wireless device clamped to the bell with one mic pointed at the low E pad and the other at the upper joint, though the room is small enough and the rhythm section quiet enough that very little amplification was used.
