Does anyone here know if Carl Long is still the USAF Band Concert Master?

That's a nice list. lots of good band stuff the way it should be. Agean Festival is such a fun cadenza, always one of my favorites. One of the pieces that I never played in the field band except on a ABA convention was pineapple poll. If I were running the audition the fugue from School for scandal would be on that list. I still think that is the hardest thing I had to play in 20 years on that gig. The School for Scandal, is like the Corvair, unsafe at any speed.

A very nice list but I think some of the clarinet parts with Ron Nelson's literature are almost impossible to play. What was he thinking :-).

Yes, David, it would not be right at all.

Tom - page 5 cadenza Makris:

A# each time (1st line above staff A) not A natural and A# only when printed right?

I can't justify the A# notationally, but sound wise it makes total sense.

Thoughts?? (anyone else too, but Solo Cl Army Field Band has "the" solo.

David,

I've always played the A# as there is no bar line to cancel out the previous A#...but what do I know...I just listen as the solo is played.

Heck...I can't remember what to play...A or A#...oh well.

Blake,

Thanks for the information. If you tell him the Allan Berry says "hi" that would be great.

Carl and I played the band at Hanover H.S. back in the mid 70's. Only I played baritone sax then...

Thanks again,
Allan

Regarding the music download: There seems to be an obvious error in the Mendelssohn Scherzo in that the third measure in the third line has 5 sixteenth notes - half a beat is missing here. Not being a competent player I am certainly no expert in such things, but to be musically consistent I suspect the first note should be a staccato eighth note.

Thanks John!

I played it in Regional Band in High School (10th grade) and the Director was a Clarinetist (Daniel DiCicco) - I played the A natural when it didn't have the # next to it and the director never corrected me. (nor did my private teacher Leon Lester catch it).

Listening to it with the A# it sounds a whole lot more "greek" in character and completely makes sense.

Like I'll ever play it again in my lifetime..........

A# for sure. That's how I've played it and was taught.

Funny thing you mention the School for Scandal Overture -- I have the recording of the Navy Band playing that....awesome piece, awesome part! I can imagine how tough it must be!!!

One of my favorites.

Lester V - yes, it (1st note) is supposed to be an eighth note like the previous measures.

Neidich taught (me) to play the eighth notes quite short, and the sixteenth notes not particularly short.

I played the solo clarinet on Aegean Festival as an undergraduate with Arnald Gabriel guest conducting, and played A sharps in the cadenza, which sounded correct to me (and evidently to Colonel Gabriel, as he complimented me afterwards.)

Interesting to see the orchestral excerpts on the list for a band audition; as vital as they are, aren't there sufficiently challenging wind excerpts available to demonstrate proficiency for a wind ensemble?
