I play many styles of music from classical to jazz to klezmer. I'm a doubler (I play flute and sax also) and have been playing Vandoren 5RV lyre for classical and a B45 for jazz, both with Vandoren 3.5 reeds. I'm at a point now where I want as darker sound for classical and a brighter one for commercial music and haven't quite found a combonation that works. Any mouthpiece/reed suggestions?
Thanks

I am a beginner, but I just switched to a Vandoren M14 and moved up to a #4 V12 reed.(from a regular Vandoren #3 on my 5RVL). Nice dark sound and very easy to play.

Dear Mike,
I suggest you to try Crystal Pomarico mouthpieces, which are the only ones that are available in brighter or mellow versions. I personally bought two crystal mouthpieces that I use alternatively with great satisfaction. I think their retailer in the Us is woodwind and brasswind.
Good Luck!!

I like the Portnoy for jazz. Mine is terrific with the throat tones. It's not bad for legit, although I'm not terribly crazy about its chalemeau register.
