 Clarinet Concerti

Any opinions on interesting Clarinet Concerti?

I'm looking to learn something (other than the Mozart, Crusell, and Copland) for our schools concerto competition next year.

Krommer Clarinet Concerto in E flat major, Op. 36.

A nice treat and something different from the ubiquitous Mozart & Weber.

For a school concerto competition, I ahve some words of wisdom (I was winner of one and have judged so this is based off of my experience).

It must have some sort of crowd appeal. Assuming that it will be performed at your school, you should choose a peice that the crowd will enjoy. Soemthing like Crusell 1 would be fun, but you want something else. Some fun ones are the Corigliano (crazy), Spohr (1 maybe?), Francaix (if you can pull it off, this is both impressive, crowd-appealing, and just fun to play), Nielsen (more modern), Rietz (very intense and powerful concerto), and Weber 2.

These are just reccomendation, so do as you see fit. Also, if you are only doing one mvoemnt, I advise against a slow one as a well executed fast piece is most likely more impressive than even the most beautifully played slow movement.

GOOD LUCK :D

agree with xpedx

fast and showy but within your technique dont worry about slow and musical bowl em over with speed and endurance. And if you look hot then dress tight and skimpy - sure fire way to win

knock em dead
