I had plans to buy a new Buffet R13 for months and it fell through as I needed the money for other things. I have been trying to save up enough to get it within the year.
Have had my heart set on a Buffet R13. However, my standmate in band just got a brand new Leblanc Symphonie and he let me try it (for a few minutes). It was hardly a good "test" but it felt really good.
I have no way of getting some of each to compare and know what one will be right 'for me' so im wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how they compare? Im a little worried my teacher wont accept it and still say im playing an inferior instrument (because its not a Buffet).
Thoughts?

The Symphonie is as least as good as the standard R13. You should choose which one you feel plays better for you. Either will give you very nice results, assuming there are no defects with the instrument you select, and that it is properly set up. The Symphonie has the advantage of coming with two barrels, so you probably won't have to spend extra money on aftermarket barrels.
As to your teacher, if s/he has been assimilated by the BORG/Buffet Mafia, there is unfortunately little hope of convincing her/him. ![[tongue]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie6.gif)

My advice is to try whatever clarinet you are considering in the ensemble--band, orchestra, quintet, etc--that you will be playing with. It is important to experiance how compatable and musically flexabile the instrument will be with others and that is not always apparent when testing it in the try-out room or at home. I have often played clarinets that feel wonderful by themselves but fail to perform as well within the ensemble in terms of blend, projection and musical expression. Just like test-driving an auto, you should always take the new clarinet for a "spin" around the musical block before buying. This applies to all the major brands--Buffet, Leblanc, Yamaha and Selmer included.

resistance is not futile... why can't you get to try some different models? Will you be play testing r13s at least?

Remember that insturments within the same make and model can vary to a large degree so you can't just do a blanket R13 vs Symphonie comparison. Individually test out the actual clarinets you are looking at to see which is the one that suits you most.

there is no place around here where I can test the Leblancs and i cannot afford to have several shipped to try out.
on the other hand there is a buffet dealer nearby who has several i can try.
i dont want to bypass the leblanc because of this and thought maybe someone here had done a comparison as i see posted on here sometimes between different models.

HTe problem is that different players have different expectations for their instruments. What would be a great clarinet for you might not be the best one for me, or vice versa.
You might want to look over the articles Tom Ridenour and others have written on how to choose an instrument.
Similarly, clarinets are remarkabnle inconsistent from one instrument to the next, so who knows what the chances are that you would get your "dream instrument" either from the music store in your area, or from a random clarinet sent to you by someone else. If you want the Buffet, try contacting Lisa's Clarinet Shop, Walter Grabner, or another vendor who sponsors this board. Talk over your needs and expectations with them. It might be best to have your teacher in on the conversation, too.
Another possibility: since summer vacation is almost here, might it be possible to arrange a trip to NYC or some other large city where you might be able to audition a number of instruments all at once?

I assume you are talking about the new Leblanc Symphonie not the old one. I've tried several, and tried many Buffets. But I can't think of anything to say that would possibly help you decide. I can just suggest a few things.
Whatever you get, eventhough there could be differences, it will be much more similar to the same model that you have tried. You said you can't afford ordering several,so maybe you can order just one Leblanc for trial and take it with you to the store to compare with buffets.
If you can try clarinets and find one that is excellent and you like it, maybe better to choose that one over randomly ordering. For example I chose my clarinet after trying just one.

Both are great clarinets. There is no wrong or right choice. It's strictly a matter of preference and/or what makes you happy.
