 NSO's new timpanist

I saw something in an article in the Washington Post (March 11, page C2.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/10/AR2010031003573.html)
about their new timpanist that may be of interest to clarinetists auditioning for orchestras. Since he had to drive a van (because you have to bring your own instruments if you want to win) from Winnepeg to DC for the audition, he lined up practice auditions with timpanists in major American orchestras along the way. "The first two attempts went terribly. The next two went much better. And by the time he got to Washington, he was in great form."
