 Loose pad - sufficient solution?
Author: moolatte

So, tomorrow is orchestra UIL contest, and my A clarinet brought up a loose pad today with the bottom trill key.

I'm using regular school glue to stick it back into place until after the performance, of where I can get a skilled technician to fix it properly.

Is this a good idea? I don't have enough time to take it into the shop since they gotta send it off to Midland before they can do anything, which can take a minimum, 3 days, which I don't have.

Long as it sticks - no problem.
White glue comes off fine with a bit of heat.

Now excuse me while I get my asbestos underwear, just in case I get flamed. :-)

it can usually be fixed quick by just heating the key cup up. normally the glue that is there will melt and reset it back in place. make sure that during the setting process that you close the key so that it seals properly with regular pressure.

Yup, just heat the pad cup with the key in closed position. The glue will restick and the pad will reseat, all by itself. I've done this with a gazillion of my students school clarinets, saxes, oboes and flutes--as well as all of my own--so I speak from "experiance". Use a butane cigarette lighter for about the time a single match would burn to avoid over heating. It is best to tilt the clarinet body so that the flame does not go directly onto the wood or plastic, but rather wafts upward over the pad cup. After heating, use the body of the lighter or the cardboard from the match pack to press lightly on the pad cup to aid reseating and resticking the pad. Then, let that pad cup cool for a couple of minutes to avoid suffering a finger burn. Beyond this, listen to your mother and do not play with fire.....LOL.
