Seems like wooden, uninspired playing to me. And the YouTube comment on the poor quality of register change is spot-on! Maybe Black & Decker made his basset horn.

Is the instrument, per chance, a period instrument? Strictly on the basis of the sound and interpretation, I agree with Larry Bocaner. I hear much interference from overtones. Of course, it's a bit unfair to judge from a YouTube broadcast; and if Schlechta's playing a period instrument, I do not quite know what to expect.

I can certainly say it's not a period Basset horn. It is most certainly a modern instrument, the (poor) register changes give that away. You don't get that on a period instrument because it is open holed like a classical clarinet.
Who knows what make of modern basset horn is being used but to me the player makes it sound more difficult than the concerto actually is from a technical standpoint.

I have the CD and think the playing is good. It isn't super slick but it sounds earnest and honest.
