 gonzalez+hair=?
Author: jacoblikesmusic

So a few days ago I purchased a box of Gonzalez FOF 3.5 reeds from Muncy Winds (2000 Harvest). Upon opening the box I found that the backs of ALL the reed cases have lots of HAIR on them. They look small and curley... Is it NORMAL for reed cases to have hair on the back of them? Should I return it or just say what the heck and take the reeds out and play?

I think that the reed 'case' is made from recycled paper. They're fine.

The hair can be diseased, I would send them back after calling them and telling them why. That can be animal or human hair but theres no reason why it should be in a box of reeds. If that was in a food source or child's toy there would be a national recall announced. I would not put them in your mouth. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Don't use them.

They all probably play a hair flat. [wink]

Is it actual hair, or just stuff that kinda looks like it might be hair?

It looks like actual hair and I already put one reed in my mouth.. Oops... So uhh do they take reeds back with one used?

I think i feel the disease already spreading through my body.

It's just fibers in the paper. Mine are all like that, it's kinda cool I think.

Mine are like that too. Nothing to worry about. It's probably like susieray said just the fibres in the paper.

Well apparantly my camera isn't high res enough to make the little curly hairs show up... Heaven knows I tried. Here's my attempt with my lame camera...

This is a very hairy posting. You could try shaving them before you play them. ESP

Just had a look at mine. Those "hairs" are intentional, part of the paper. I severely doubt they're actual hair. Things like that are common in specialty papers.

Now, if you find an actual strand of hair hanging out in the box that's not part of the paper, that would be grounds for concern.

FWIW Selmer Primo reed cases are "hairy" as well. (no surprise, they're made by Gonzalez).

It's just the paper recycling process. For stiffer papers and cardboard they (the manufacturers) don't only take old paper but they also throw textiles and apparently the odd horsehair mattress into the mix.

Oh my god. I can't believe this post has gone on so long. It's recycled paper; recycled paper looks like that. It is made from various other papers, some of which have fibres in.

You've got Gonzalez reeds, arguably some of the best. Take them out, play them, put them in a reed case and don't think twice about the packaging. Except to recycle it!
