Paquito is the featured interview in the Dec 2009 issue of Downbeat. He is on the cover as he is the winner of the 74th annual readers poll on clarinet. Amazing player and musician.

My favorite clarinetist. I've only seen him once in concert, but it was AWESOME!

Almost impossible to believe that clarinet is really his "secondary" instrument (as in he was already phenominal on sax when he decided, "Hey, I think I'll be one of the world's greatest clarinet players too.") Man. The skill and talent this guy has is unbelievable.

He can do anything on his clarinet or sax, and make it sound easy. And, as Ed said, he is a "nice person". A couple years ago, after a sold out concert at our University's Union Theatre (The Assid Brothers....and guest, P. D'Rivera) where he played over two hours accoustic clarinet with the guitar duo--no mikes, etc--he took a few moments to talk with me at one of the backstage entrances. Although obviously tired, he answered all of my reed, mpc, clarinet questions in a most unhurried and friendly manner--like I was the first clarinetist to ever ask such questions. It was like talking to an old friend, not an international superstar musician. Truely, one of the nicest pros I have ever encountered anywhere. Just had to throw that in here..........

He used to live on the street behind our house here in NJ; I would frequently hear him practicing (always clarinet!) while walking or running by his house. He's since moved a couple of miles up on the Boulevard, but is still very involved in local Hudson County Arts and performance projects.

A marvelous musician, and a fine citizen!
