I recently purchased a clarinet for my son who decided he wants to learn to play. I have only played on Selmers, starting on a Bundy 577, then having it bored out to .590 and the purchasing a Selmer Soloist after following the Buffet hype, buying one and then being sorely dissapointed by it. Anyhoo, the clarinet that I bought (mainly because it intrigued me) is a Selmer Special 100, I have searched the internet over and over to see if there was such a brand or if this clarinet had a Signet 100 bell mixed in. But the bell itself says Special 100. Here are the links to the pics of it. I played it and even with leaky pads it has a beautiful warm tone even in the A, Bb, B and C. Plays very close to my Soloist, I use a Selmer HS* mouthpiece with a Vandoren 3.5 or Mitchell Lurie 4 Reed, depending on my mood . Any input on this clarinet is greatly appreciated. Below are links to pics of the top join and the bell. Serial Number is 142654, if that can help identify this clarinet and when it may have been produced.

Just recently, I sold a Selmer [USA] 100 wood to a friend for student use . hope he/she takes care of it, it was one of the better "Intermediates'" I have run across, as you said, warm chalemeau , not too bright clarion !! I believe that this same designed cl became later the Selmer Signet , makes me want to retrieve my Sig and compare it to a fine-playing Noblet [N], 40/45 ??, again an iexpensive, but near pro , intermediate. Yes, I bought a Selmer USA 100 for a very low price, overhauled it, and tuned it, making it into a fine clarinet. It will hold it's own almost anywhere, although perhaps not quite at the Buffet professional level. When I gave it to my 10 year old granddaughter a year ago, she took it to bed with her and she still loves it! Good luck!

Thank you for your responses. Do you have any idea of when Selmer may have made the "Selmer Signet Special 100". My internet search is still only bringing up Selmer Signet 100 and Selmer Signet Specials as seperate products, no info found on "Selmer Signet Special 100" I am excited to get it back from the shop to see how it plays after having an overhaul.

I ressurected my Sig from sales consignment, and so far find it to be a much more "bright-toned" cl , it also being played on a Selmer HS* mps., but with prob. differing refacings, {by me]. The Sig "fingers" much the same, and plays easily. Measuring the Sig's bores [UJ top and bottom only] at 14.6 mm, smaller than my Sel 100 as I recall, more like the Selmer [Paris ] 10G[igliotti- designed cl [then] for competition with the Buffet R13's of that time]. Mine says only Special above the Signet [in oval] then Selmer USA, there is a very small ?number? below the oval. My Ser # is 267,411 only on the bot. of the UJ. If yours does have the 100 on it, perhaps it is a "cross-over" between the two. How's that for throwing some gasoline onto this ?fire? .Don

Thank you Don! The mystery continues. I agree with the possibility of this being a cross over. When I get it back from the shop I will measure the bores and see what they measure. My luck is that I have some strange Selmer Hybrid (lol) that maybe they should've kept making seeing that it sounds much like my Soloist does. Thank you so much for your input!!
