I'm auditioning with the Shostakovich 1 Excerpts from the Pete Hadcock book. The tempos are written as the originals (which are considered faster than what is typically played) but I am listening to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It's about Quarter = 120 or so in the first movement. Curious if anyone knows the tempo that is typically played. Thanks.

Are you sure that Chicago does the first mov't at 120? That seems incredibly slow since the markings are 152 and 160, though this mov't is often played with a lot of rubato. It seems every time we play Shostakovich with any conductor we always take the tempos closer to what's written, especially when we do them with a Russian conductor. We had Yuri Temirkanov for about five years and we did many of the Shostakovich Symphonies and he always took the tempos very fast, at or close to the markings. I think that is more typical than you, or Hancock, thinks. Listen to a Russian recording and play it closer to the markings written. I know Hancock suggests about 132 in the first mov't, that is at least better than the 120 you mentioned, but even that seems slow to me. I've played it and heard it faster. Every conductor has their own ideas. Typical is not always a word in a conductors vocabulary. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
