 Rome and Vienna
Author: Kevin

Greetings all,

I will be taking a holiday at the end of this month, stopping in Vienna and then in Rome.

Does anyone know of good clarinet and/or classical music related gems to dig out in these two cities? Outside of the obvious landmarks that pop up in the introductory pages of travel guidebooks, like the Musikverein or the Staatsoper.

I will be in Vienna 3 nights and in Rome for 4, so there might be an opportunity to make a day trip out to a nearby city. (e.g. Salzburg, Naples; or a bit farther out, Budapest, Munich, Florence, etc.)

If you could find Mozart's harmonie arrangement of Abduction from the Seralio, that would be nice. It's probably lying around somewhere in Vienna.

I have that arrangement, it's published by Musica Rara.

Peter,

that's a nice arrangement (Musica Rara) of Seraglio for harmonie (I have it too), but I'm afraid Mozart did not arrange it (I think Wendt is the arranger, but I don't have it in front of me).

Mozart wrote to his father about wanting to make a harmonie arrangement of Seraglio, and there are a couple, but no evidence that they are by Mozart or that he even got around to making the arrangement.

There is another great music shop in the Innere Stadt of Vienna called Musik Muller on Krugerstrasse. They have numerous files of clarinet music, including many Urtext editions, all at reasonable prices. You should also visit the museum of Old Instruments in the New Palace of the Hofburg. They have many beautiful examples of early clarinets and bassethorns, aswell as hundreds of other instruments from the Medieval to the modern.
