Can one be used for the other instrument?

No. On current mouthpieces, the outside and the reeds are the same, but the bore (and the tenon) are much larger on the BBb.

I use the same (BBb) mouthpiece for EEb and BBb. Works fine. As long as the two instruments have the same bore off course, which the Leblanc metal models do.

Hi jsc:

I do most of the commercial work here in NYC on all the Clarinets.

I play Selmer Rosewood Contra Alto & Bass Clarinets.

I use two very different mouthpieces on each horn, as they are really quite different.

So, it depends on your use, and the kind of Contras you are using.

Good luck.

P.S. Try finding the soundtrack to "Interview with a Vampire". It's a pretty good movie, not great, but I'm playing both Contras on the film...and it's real scary, so watch it with a friend!
