advice on mouthpiece for selmer prologue ii
Author: Jud
Date:   2009-04-05 21:53

Hi there,

I have a selmer prologue ii which tends to play quite sharp- I am just using the mouthpiece that came with it but was hoping to upgrade soon.

Any advice on what would be a good choice to even out the pitch? And how much do you need to spend for something half decent?

Also is the standard mouthpiece they give you any good (I'm not too much of an expert)- I used to play with one of my teacher's old buffet mouthpieces which sounded lovely but I don't know if that was because it was particularly good or my exisitng one was a bit rubbish...

Thanks for any tips you can give!

Any of the 13 series (American pitch) vandoren mouthpieces will bring down the pitch a bit.

M13Lyre- 13 series
M15- 13- 13 series or the
M30- 13 Series

See the vandoren website for reed strength equivalents.

These mouthpices run between 60-90 dollars US. Paired with vandoren reeds (on the softer side of what is suggested on the website) will give you a good sound that is lower in pitch.

Yes, they can play sharp!

The C85 mouthpiece (probably) that came with it is generally considered OK.

The 13-series mouthpieces will indeed flatten things but I think there are only a few to choose from.

There are slight differences between other mouthpieces but for the moment you'll just have to pull out a long way.

You might find that a set of Tuning Rings helps - they fit inside the socket of the barrel and fill the gap that's left when you pull out.

Other than that, you're after a long barrel, which is slightly trickier to get hold of. I think the standard on these is 66.5mm, which is pretty big to begin with.
