 Clark Studies and the Clarinet
Author: Brian Peterson
Date:   2009-04-02 19:45

One of my students came into his lesson the other week and told me that he had to "pass off" all 12 Clark Scale Studies, eighth note = 180 as part of his band grade.

Can someone help me out here? What is the benefit is for clarinet players working up an exercise that seems more suited for brass instruments?

I'd much rather have him working on broken or diminished seventh chords than getting all worked up struggling to get through an F# major for his trumpet playing band director.

Thanks.

Are these the Herbert L. Clarke scale studies?

You have to learn to play all the scales evenually, so there is no harm in learning all the scales whether it is through Baermann, Pares, Stievenard, Klose or from a trumpet method book.

I regularly use the Arban trumpet book in lessons and have found it to have great value.
