I've deleted a few threads on this news article thinking that it really doesn't belong here - it really doesn't have anything to do with the clarinet per se and could possibly besmirch the memory of a fine musician, but after reflection I've decided to put this link up with no comment.
For those of you who have started threads on this and have had either Glenn or myself delete them, my apologies. Your comments were taken to heart and have resulted in my putting this back up.
I'm going to leave this open for comments for now, but I really think at this moment none are necessary. We'll see how things play out.

I don't see how it would besmirch Gigliotti's memory - it says that he was good to the boy and, if anything, saved him from the horrific treatment that was meted out to him later. It sounds to me as though Gigliotti was the one good thing going on there.

Hello,
Incredible! It reminds me of my college days when I was the driver for the artists at the OU Clarinet Symposium. Dr. Etheridge asked me to pick up Mr. Gigliotti from the airport. At the time, I had a Honda Civic hatchback (tiny car). When I got to the airport, Mr. Gigliotti and the woman in question in the article were there, along with a month's worth of tour clothing!!! Mrs. Gigliotti seemed very quiet and Mr. Gigliotti was very nice and treated the situation with humor. He basically sat half on my lap and half on his wife's lap for the 30 minute ride from the airport to Norman. When we got there, he gave me a box of reeds as a gift for the drive. I immediately asked him to sign the box, which he did, and which I still have, but he made me promise that I would play the reeds in the box!!! I miss players like Mr. Gigliotti. "They don't make them like that anymore!".

I think it's a valuable article, even though its topicality is debatable. As artists we have a self-image of education, enlightenment and the pursuit of beauty--particularly on the classical side. Things can most definitely go wrong, and this certainly seems the case with Gigliotti's wife...herself probably at least an able player.
I see nothing to reflect badly on Gigliotti himself. It's just a reminder that intelligence and talent don't necessarily negate our baser emotions.
