Does anyone know the history of this model? Was it the precursor to the 20? What was its place in their lineup? What years was it made? Why did they dump it? Anything else you can tell me about it would be appreciated.

Yamaha's model numbering system is pretty comprehensive - the 2x or 2xx series being the entry level (or 'standard') models in their lineup, all 2x or 2xx series clarinets are plastic bodied.
The 2nd number is the 'development' number, so it gives an idea of when the clarinet was made - the higher the number, the more recent it is. Therefore a YCL-24 is an earlier model compared to a YCL-26II.
The suffix 'N' signifies nickel plated keywork (likewise an 'S' signifies silver plated keywork).

So a 20 would be an earlier model than the 23? Do you happen to know the dates of production?
