As an occasional meddler in the maintenance and overhaul of clarinets and saxophones, I have failed to find an outlet in UK for white leather kid clarinet pads where I can buy then in ones, just what I need.
So far I have bought them from Ferree's in USA - and they have given me fantastic customer service.
But there a couple of sites in UK that sell white leather bassoon pads, one does 3mm thick ones.
Happy to display my ignorance of all things woodwind, are they significantly different to clarinet pads as to stop me using them for soprano and alto currently in line for working on?

I think you will find that most bassoon pads are made with a much softer felt than is really suitable for clarinets. This is because basson toneholes tend often to be less even since many of their holes join the surface at an oblique angle and/or have several small holes covered by a single pad.
They also tend to be rather thicker than clarinet pads which could give a problem in getting a correct seat.
You might get away with them on an alto clarinet but why not use brown leather pads .

Thanks for your reply - good to hear from you. I am just down the road from you, and you serviced my Leblanc Opus a couple of years ago!
The person who repadded my bass puts sax pads in - I wonder how they differ from the "official" pads....
The alto I am going to do is an old Noblet, and I suspect the tones holes may not be perfect (haven't taken it apart yet) but correcting that is beyond my competence if they are not level, so soft pads may be more forgiving than proper alto clari pads.
As for using white with sops - it is just cosmetics. I like them!

If you get Glotin (CLG) bassoon pads, they're firm so should be fine on clarinet.
Selmer basses use a fair amount of sax pads, though Leblanc/Noblet/Vito, Buffet and Yamaha basses use much thinner pads - bassoon/contra pads will work on these ones.

Just a bit more info from the web site selling pads
Clarinet:
"Special Tan Leather, with polythene membrane between leather and felt, 3mm thick by L. Pisoni"
Bassoon:
"Special white leather, with polythene membrane between leather and felt. Thickness: 3mm by L. Pisoni"
So the felt is different. Is it a "don't even bother" difference, or a "give it a go, they might be OK" difference for the soprano !?...

I haven't tried all pads but Music Center (aka Pisoni) are my favorite pads for leather or other types of pads (for sax leather pads I compared about ten different companies/models).
If I know what white leather pads you are talking about (and I'm pretty sure I do) then you will find that they might even be identical to brown clarinet leather pads (from the same place), and the only difference is the colour. You should ask the supplier about it.

Thanks for your input, my next port of call will be the supplier, which will have to wait until Tuesday.
I have been circumspect about the source as I do not want to fall foul of the BB rules, but having just read them again,I think I can cite the source I am looking at, which are here
So I suppose, in its simplest form, my question to someone who has in front of them two leather pads (of whatever colour) made by Pisoni of equal diameter and 3mm thickness, one for a bassoon, and one for a soprano/alto clarinet - just how different from each other are they?

Cris, If you get the pads with backing card printed "premium deluxe" then there is not too much difference - I think on my selection the brown leather type have a slightly finer "grain" and slightly harder/ shinier finish but up to about 20mm they are fairly close .
I have bassoon pads with plain white backing that are significantly softer and thicker so you should avoid those on clarinet.
I have some brown leather pads marked "Mypad" which also have a much coarser grain, these are probably quite old stock.

The web site picture indeed has "premium deluxe" written on the back of the bassoon pads. I assume that is a true reflection of what they sell rather than just a lift of the picture of a clarinet pads from the Pisoni (Music Centre) web site.
I think I will get a set and try them. I'll do the alto first. I'll probably check with the retailers first to see what they say.

Glotin used to make a leather clarinet pad with a bevel. I used them for a while but, as far as I know, there currently is not a Glotin wholesaler in the US.

Just to update the thread, and to help any future searches once this thread is archived out of sight.
I have contacted the supplier of the Pisoni pads in question, and they tell me that as far as the premium deluxe bassoon white leather pads are concerned, they are the same as the tan leather clarinet pads apart from the colour of the leather, and can be used interchangeably.
