 Can't find old post!
Author: Sambo 933

Hi,
I am looking for an older post from 2-3 months ago, which contained a link to a pdf of some excerpts for an audition(one of which was from an overture by Mendelssohn).

I have an audition in a few weeks ans thought if I could find this thread I might use this particular excerpt. I don't really remember the name so I have had no luck finding it with the search too. Can anyone help me find it?

In the past few months, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and also the CSO have posted PDF's of audition repertoire on their website.

Those links are no longer active... GBK

The CSO asked for the Scherzo to a Midsummer Night's Dream (as do many orchestras). However, they only provided copies of rental-only parts so there was no Mendelssohn in their pdf file. The Royal Flemish Philharmonic audition was for Eb and Bass. They included a few 2nd clarinet parts but nothing from Mendelssohn. I seem to remember a thread (probably a bit older) about an audition for one of the military bands that had a link to their audition list. It had a pdf file but I don't remember what was included (and I didn't download it). I seem to remember seeing a brief excerpt from the Hebrides Overture somewhere fairly recently, however, and it may have been there. If the excerpt you're looking for wasn't from the Midsummer Night's Dream, it was probably the Hebrides. There is some lyrical exposes solo clarinet in it (and a very nice duet for the first and second clarinets).

Best regards,
jnk

Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture is also known as Fingal's Cave. You should look for it under that name too.

The clarinet solo/duet is gorgeous and calls for a tone the size of a house. There's a good recording with Szell and Cleveland, but, at least for me, Marcellus is too laid back and difficult to hear. The best I've heard is by Iggy Genussa on an aircheck tape he used to give to everyone he met.

The complete clarinet part is in Vol. 1 of The Orchestra Musician's CD-ROM library, available from Gary Van Cott. http://www.vcisinc.com/vol1toc.pdf

The clarinet parts are also here (along with a score and all the other parts):

http://imslp.org/wiki/The_Hebrides%2C_Op.26_(Mendelssohn%2C_Felix)#Orchestral_Parts

The first and second parts are both on the same staff (probably an extraction from the score) with no indication which is first part and which is second.

Best regards,
jnk
