The cuticle on my right thumb (just where I hold the clarinet) has been sore and tender for some time now. I've been applying aloe cream to no lasting effect.
I'm seeking suggestions for dealing with this annoying condition.

Hey Allen, playing too much tennis? Without seeing the problem, my best suggestion is cut, clean, dress, heal, rest.
Good luck!

awm34,
It might be prudent to let your doctor look at it in case it's gotten infected.

Try some soap and water and then a bandage.

Thanks for the suggestions (aside from playing too much tennis). There's no apparent reason for the soreness and certainly no infection (my wife is a working RN and my daughter is a nurse practicioner).
It seems what's needed is a regimen to toughen up just that one corner of the cuticle. Suggestions welcome!

Since you're sure it's not infected.... I have used Nu Skin for that kind of thing.
A helium balloon tied to your bell will take the weight off your thumb, but it will look a bit odd :-)

When that happened to me I just wore a band aid around my thumb when I practiced until it healed.

I think the idea of a neck strap is a good idea, many players use them now. Also putting something softer on the bottom of the thumb rest, a piece of rubber tubing or some type of softer material would probably work. ESP

To Alan Messer,
This might be an overly obvious question (sorry), but do you use any padding or cushion on the thumb rest??
If not, that is possibly the (or "part of the") problem.

I've begun trying Nu-Skin (actually its Rite-Aid lower-priced alternative) and I'll report on progress.
I do have a Ridenour thumb saddle and using it helps.

A few applications of the (cheaper) Nu-Skin substitute has done the trick.
Thanks to Hans for the suggestion!
