I notice some people have a polishing cloth type thing layed over top of their clarinet in the case. I also notice that BG makes something like this.

What are the benefits of this?

No real benefits besides being there as a reinforcement to make you wipe the keywork down before putting your clarinets away.
Provided the case has a soft lid cushion and the duster/polishing cloth (non-impregnated type) is laid down opened out completely flat on top, you won't do any harm to your clarinet.
If you do keep an impregnated silver polishing cloth with your gear, always keep it in a plastic bag to stop it drying out and collecting dust, and don't put this in the case on top of your clarinet as it'll be too thick which will bend keywork - keep it in the inside case compartment or in the pocket on the case cover (or between the case cover and case lid if there's no pocket).

Thanks! I wasn't sure if it was mainly for looks or if it was something important to have. By the way, what polishing cloths do you recommend for nickel? I'm possibly looking for something treated to help shine the keys a bit.

I put a piece of cloth in the case to protect the velvet in the case top from oil stains.

Ditto.
There's not much you can do with nickel plate if it gets dull (apart from machine polishing it when all the pads and corks have been removed), but as a preventative measure wipe down the keywork with a soft cotton cloth (or an old T-shirt) to remove perspiration after playing.

Also, can you use a polishing cloth made for silver on a nickel plated clarinet? Is there much difference?

A silver polishing cloth is fine for nickel plate, but never use a silvercloth on anything lacquered.

I place an old dishtowel over my soprano clarinet sets and my bass clarinet and store the handkerchief swabs on top of that. The keys are protected while the swabs dry after use and the extra cloth keeps the clarinets from moving around too much.
