I bought my Buffets back in the 80s -- got them second-hand from my teacher who was buying a new set. At the time, he told me they were R-13s.
I was just looking up my serial numbers on the Buffet website to see when they were built --- and when I did, neither of them came up as R-13. My Bb is listed as an "S1" and my A is listed as "La Amerique."
So, now that I find I've been living a lie, I'm curious about the differences. :-) I did a search online, but only found that the S1 has a different barrel shape. And I've found no mention of anything called "La Amerique" anywhere. Does anyone have any additional information on either of these clarinets?
Oh -- and the listing I found for the "S1" said that those clarinets have an "S" underneath the Buffet logo -- but my clarinet doesn't. Anyone know about the accuracy of the Buffet database?

bearing in mind my memory gets fuzzier the older i get,
i think a s1 has a 'S1' inside a triangle under the buffet logo on the top joint. its a very distinctive engraved logo. missing that logo its probably an r13.
and yes, the buffet database is known for containing errors

If I recall correctly, the S1 clarinet, as Paul mentioned, had a very clear additional maring right below the Buffet crest. It was an elongated diabond shape, sort of l9ke this: <> with the S1 d3esignation inside th diamond. I never pwned one of these, but I recall seing them a t a chow in Cincinnati for music educators.

The La Amerique is an R13 A clarinet tuned to A440 (65mm barrel) for the American market.

My first wooden clarinet was an S1- it had "S1" on it, but no triangle. Smaller tone holes (and accordingly spaced ever so slightly differently from the R13 and more heavily undercut) gave it a slightly more concentrated and sweeter sound, but also made it every so slightly more resistant than the R13 and prone to fuzzy notes if the undercutting was too aggressive. (on ANY clarinet, if a tone hole is too conical this results in a fuzzy sound).
