 Key tarnish...
Author: Joey

Hi everyone... well I'm a student here at Southwest Texas State, under Dr. David Pino, and tonight I just learned some interesting facts about key tarnish, especially for ppl with silver keys...

Dr Pino told me that when he asked several reps from Buffet about the keywork tarnish appearing on his instruments, they told him the problem was more than likely from the mpc. Because of the rubber material many mpcs are made of today, there is a certain gas that is freed during playing and after playing. What they suggested is to wrap the mpc in a small plastic bag after use to trap the gas from affecting the instrument. I'm thinking just about any little bag will work, as long as the mpc fits and can be wrapped up in the plastic... Dr Pino commented that he's had great results in this method of storage, so I thought I'd pass on some learned info for those who, like myself, often like to have their horn looking nice and shiney :)

That's it :)

We've had some interesting debates about this in the past. Yes, it's known that the vuclanization process in making any rubber product can discolor silver, For this reason, never keep elastic bands or pencil erasers in your instrument case. I've long suspected that the mouthpiece may also be a culprit. Thank you for what appears to be a confirmation. By the way, please tell your teacher he has an avid reader here in Paris.

By the way, I also wonder whether leather also is a cause of tarnishing. I have had far fewer problems with discoloration since switching from a chamois to a silk swab.

Although someone on this bulletin board once suggested that hard rubber mouthpieces shouldn't emit sulfur fumes the way rubber bands, etc. will, the inside of my silver mouthpiece cover is highly discolored. The original mouthpiece that came with the instrument came in a closed plastic container, which it is still in. It probably wouldn't hurt to find something similar for my "good" mouthpiece or to do as you suggest with it.

oh, i think Dr Pino found out from Kloc(sp?), who had been working with Buffet ppl for a while trying to figure out the tarnish problem, I believe he's the one Pino asked at TMEA in San Antonio last spring.
