just wondering..... if my Lyrique clarinet needs adjusting, tweaking, cork or pad repair do i HAVE to send it back to Tom? or can anyone work on this clarinet? I expect anyone can, but just wanted to make sure.

Anyone can work on the clarinet - although some won't (I know Brannen won't work on any of the new Leblancs, and I'm sure he wouldn't touch a Lyrique!).
For minor stuff, anyone can help you out. For any adjusting/tuning issues, I would send it back to Tom - you'll get the best service, and I think the adjustments a free if you bought it from him.

Check your warranty... just to make sure that third-party work doesn't void it. If there is a question, contact Tom Ridenour. Better safe than sorry.

Check with Tom first. If he says it's OK to go to another shop, look at Anderson Music on Rochester Road, north of 16 Mile in Troy. Their tech is quite good, and you won't have to ship off the instrument. (I am assuming you are in Metro Detroit, as evidenced by your ISP)

Excellent question. Do they have far too much work, or are they not capable of working on other brands, or are they just plain snobbish.
Anybody with that attitude in my country couild not feed their kids.

I don't know the Brannens but they have earned an excellent rep in the Midwest. I'm pretty certain they have a line of customers just waiting to be serviced.

Can you explain? What do they specialize in?
I know a very good bassoon repairman who won't work on clarinets - that's a kind of specialty. I've not yet heard of a clarinet repairer/technician that would refuse a specific brand of instrument as a rule.

Buffet clarinets. They don't work on other brands. Their decision, not anyone else's, so no reason to disparage them.

For years, the Brannens would only work on certain clarinets. Yamaha clarinets were added to the list of clarinets that they would work on a few years back. I have sent my Buffets and Yamaha clarinets to them, and they have always done an exemplary job. I suppose if they have more demand for their services than they can handle, maybe they just stick to doing the horns they're more comfortable with. All I know is my student contacted them about working on her Leblanc (Cadenza), and they said they don't do Leblancs.

Didn't know they added Yamaha.
But why anyone would disparage people who specialize is beyond me. If you don't like it, don't use them.

Mark,
I sent them my Yamaha about 3 years ago, and it came back playing great ( as expected). It had been a LONG time since I had used Brannens (took 15 years off from playing), so I don't know when they added Yamaha, but they didn't bat an eye when I told them I had a CS custom.

Seeing your from MA, there is a great music shop in Boston, with excellent repair techs...Rayburns Music. When I lived in Vermont I used to take them to Rayburns and Emilo Lyons.

I guess it's very difficult to go to the Brannen repair website and see they clearly write: "We work on the following brands only: Buffet Crampon, Selmer, Leblanc and Yamaha."

Yes, that is clearly not correct considering how they run their business. But I would guess having met Bill and Linda several times that the accuracy of their website (and its' existence) is a minor annoyance, and more of a necessary evil.
When you call them to schedule they're pretty clear about what services they provide.

I called the Brannens to see if they could work on a Cadenza. They said they would work on other Leblanc pro horns, but that they had no source of parts as of yet for Morrie Backun's particular clarinets, and were very courteous and respectful in suggesting that I send it instead directly to Morrie if I needed customizing done on the horn.
I don't believe for a minute that they were refusing to work on it for any other reason than what Ms. Brannen said to me. They would have been happy to work on it, except for the parts issue.

Jeff, have you lost/broken/ruined parts of your Cadenza? Pads, springs, etc. aren't different. Pivot screws of other brands might work, but I guess should be possible to get from Conn-Selmer or Backun. Other parts... why would you need any?

To me it seems that Gordon's comments weren't about Brannen or specific to any repairer, but general about the idea of not working on certain brands, including ones that are supposed to be good new models (like the new Leblanc ones). It is interesting (and sometimes important) to know why.

Clarnibass, I never made the comment you quoted. That was a comment from Mark, not me. I merely relayed what I heard from the Brannens when I asked if they could "Brannenize" my new clarinet. I just wanted to have it at a professional level of performance, and thought it might be worth sending it off to them for the work they do on new instruments.

Although they are always busy you can call or email the Brannens for info on what they can and cant do regarding clarinet repair with varius brands of clarinets. I understand that Tom's clarinets are growing in popularity.
