Hello everybody. I have problems with my tonguing, I'm attacking the roof of my throat ( just milimeters away off the root of my teeth) to create an articulation. Some of my friends said it should be on the tip of the reed, some of them have no idea how they do it...... The Staccato I produced are fat and ugly when I compare it on the recordings I heard. Can anybody lend me some help here ?

Hi Tan,
A pointed tongue on the tip of the reed. If you do not touch the reed, all you are doing is momentarily blocking the air stream.
Try the syllable tu or ta and see if you have been using a breath attack for everything. The reed should be touched in much the same way for staccato but first find out if there is a more fundamental tonguing issue that needs to be addressed first.

Yes, you indeed need to touvh the tip of your tounge to the tip of the reed. touvhing the roof of your mouth will make it near impossible to achieve clean, clar articulations, especially at faster tempi. is that a word? i believe it is....never used it.

Hank said it correctly. Try doing this. Practice just saying the syllable Tee, or Tu with out your clarinet in your mouth. Notice how the tongue touches the top teeth just about where the gums meet them. Once you get the concept of how you’re doing it place the clarinet in your mouth and copy what you did only this time the reed should be in the way so you should be touching near the tip of the reed with the tip, Tee, Tu, of your tongue. Once you get the idea practice several strokes at a time until you begin to master it. Never hit the reed hard, use a gentle Tee, Tu stroke. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457 A little Mozart
