Which one would you prefer as an intermediate wood clarinet a Buffet E-11 or Yamaha 450? Tell me your reasons. Thanks.

I would prefer a 450, because it's cheaper. I tried them both out and I couldn't appreciate the differences, so I'd go on price.

That is me, though.

I really like the pro Buffet clarinets, but hate hate hate the E11. It has some strange intonation issues and feels like a piece of junk. I think for a comparable price, you could buy the Yamaha 650.

Between the two mentioned, the 450.

For the price you're talking about, however, I personally think the Ridenour Lyrique is the best buy for the money.

The Yamaha that I have played have great feel and intonation. That would be my choice.

I agree with the suggestion to try the Lyrique from Tom Ridenour instead of either the E-11 or the 450.

Yamaha by far - just chose your price point.

I have never played the Yamaha, but I like my Buffet E-11 very much.

I saw a ridenour 147 for 70 dollars buy it now on that auction site just the other day.

I have an E11, and am using it at the moment because my R13s are in the shop. I don't like it compared to my R13, the sound tends to be a bit brighter and has different tuning tendencies.

I'm not sure I could part with my E11, but I think i would look at the intermediate ridenour before yamaha if I were to replace it.

Lots of complaints I hear about the E11 have to do with the ridiculous 64.5mm barrel supplied with it. With a proper (say 66mm Moennig) barrel it is in my experience a good sounding and tuning instrument, and a tremendous value for the money, even with spending an extra $100 for a good barrel.

Given that both of these intermediate instruments are more than $1000 at some of the better-known online retailers around the US, you may also want to consider the Ridenour 576 BC, which is an excellent clarinet and superior to the E11, IMO, and around $1000 also. I have worked with a decent E11 in the past, and I much prefer the tuning characteristics of Tom's instrument, which I acquired recently. I can't address the Yamaha, as I have not played this model.

One other item in favor of Tom's clarinets is that they are not subject to the variations wood experiences with changes in weather, including cracking and intonation problems. On the down side, the Ridenour clarinets are not available with silver-plated keys, if you consider this to be an important issue.
