Hello list,
Does anyone know of an official edition for the Weber Quintet for string orchestra?
I have someone after the string parts and wondered if it was available or hire only?

Hey Donny!
Kalmus has a decent edition. The "arrangement" is by a man named Lucas Drew. The only substantive change I noticed was the addition of a string bass part.
I found the second and fourth movements made a nice pairing, as the entire piece is a bit long.
I'm sure some people will consider this approach heresy, but if you need a "traditional" piece for clarinet and string orchestra, this fills the bill rather nicely.

Sabine Meyer is using the quartet parts, and DB is playing the Cello part.
I know it for sure because we did the quintet with orchestra on Clarinet Days 2004, and Sabine was one of the teachers in the course.

...you've forgotten that on that occasion it was me who was conducting the Israel Chamber Orchestra; I gave the DB the 'cello part and told her what notes to play and what notes to leave out. (I made it up:-)
Sabine was there, but had no part in it.

i just played it month ago.......exactly as Sabine Meyer did it-quartet parts + bass doubled cello part !

Tony,
I remember very well that you were the conductor in that concert and will never forget the wonderful Mozart that you played at the same concert too.
I also remember that the orchestra used MY parts of the quintet, as I was asked to do. It was Sabine's idea to do the Weber in the course.
Did you give the orchestra different parts? I didn't know about that.

Yes, I did; and the leader then bowed them, so the players weren't worried by that issue when we came to rehearse.
Really, the only point of my post was to underline that there ISN'T a 'Sabine Meyer' version of the Weber Quintet for string orchestra.
Of course, playing it with string orchestra is in many ways a travesty of the piece. But on the other hand, on this occasion we had the ICO, plus students who would benefit from playing with an orchestra, so...
The bottom line is: the addition of a bass part has to involve arbitrary decisions; on this occasion I made them.
If YOU want to do it, you have to do the same.
But if you want AUTHORITY, then....sorry, tough:-)

I am not an authority for anything. In my first post I wrote that I know that Sabine is using the quintet parts and DB playing the cello. As you see I double checked it. Here is the answer I got from Reiner Wehle (the husband of Sabine Meyer)

I don't doubt it, Sarah; and I certainly wasn't criticising you in any way -- or indeed, arguing with you.
I just wanted to point out that in this case, *I* was the one who decided, arbitrarily, what notes the double bass should play; and I wanted to take responsibility for that in order to be able to remove any LEGITIMACY other people -- not you -- may want to give to the procedure of playing the Weber Quintet with full strings because they're doing 'the version for full strings'.
There IS no 'version for full strings'. There's just a number of people, including Sabine Meyer -- and, on this occasion, me -- who for different reasons have thought it worthwhile to add a double bass part. So to anyone thinking of presenting the Weber quintet as a mini-concerto, a procedure in no way sanctioned by Weber, I want to say: you choose to do it YOURSELF, and therefore YOU have to take responsibility for doing it.
If that troubles your conscience a bit, then well done, I say:-)
Interestingly, there's another associated problem, more relevant to the initial post. That is: you need to buy at least 4 copies of the quintet version so as to have enough parts for the orchestra.
Do you do this?-)

As you know Tony, I do respect copyrights in clarinet days courses, you always got original parts for the orchestral and chamber music we have done in the course. That is the reason that we don't play Copland or Neilsen in the course- we can not afford that.
And in that concert we had two stands for each section and did not need 4 copies.
