I just got my new reed finishing system. Holy moly! I am SOOO pleased to elimate the years of frustration I have dealt with in the past.
I went to the music store this morning to get a box of 3 1/2 Vandorens to "play" with my new ATG system. They didnt have any 3 1/2's so I got 4's.(mind you - Ive been playing 2 1/2 -3 with my teacher encouraging me to go with a 3 1/2 in the past few weeks) Never in a million years would I had been able to play on the 4's without the reed system. Applying the simple priciples given, I was able to get all 10 reeds to work great. a few need a little more adjusting but all are good, playable reeds.
anyone who continues to be frustrated by reeds - youve got to try this.

Or go up 1 1/2 strength in reeds.... From your explanation, sounds like you were playing on the wrong reed strength. ATG is good, though...

yes, i was playing on the wrong strength, which is why my teacher wanted me to go to a 3 1/2. its just that the store didnt have that strength so I went with a 4. tho, 3 1/2 would probably be more correct for me. I just wanted something to "play" with while I learned the ATG system. It is amazing. I tried to tell the 1st chair clarinetist last night (i sit next to him), but he didnt want to hear it. said he never heard of using sandpaper and pulled out his knife and started scraping.
