I would like to get a better clarinet for my 13 year old daughter. She has passed the grade 6 RSM exam and currently has a Yamaha 26II. Any suggestions as to what might be an appropriate instrument for her age and level and the best place to get one in the South of England?

Hi Richard! I'm a professional clarinettist/teacher from the South West of England, so I read your post with interest. The best place to buy a clarinet is Packers in Taunton. They're a woodwind specialist shop with all the back-up you'll ever need & some of the cheapest prices in England. I send all my pupils there - the service is second to none! As regards instrument, I would opt for a Buffet clarinet. They are my particular favourite, & for your daughter (having passed grade 6), you should now be looking for a professional quality instrument. I'd try out a R13; but Packers do stock the whole range of instruments: Buffet, Selmer, Yamaha, Leblanc. Go & try them out! Where in the south are you? Packers would post instruments to you if you couldn't get to Taunton. You should also take advice from your daughter's teacher, as we all have our favourites & likes & dislikes. Good luck - hope this has helped. Let me know how you get on. Best wishes, Lynne Woodhouse.

Hello Lynn - I read your posting to Richard and am curious as to why there is no mention of Boosey & Hawkes or Peter Eaton clarinets in your recommendation. I've never played either, but have played Buffets, Selmers amd Leblancs and always thought the two English made clarinets were, by reputation, at least, their equals, or near equals. I am a jazz player, and have always been impressed with the English "trad" jazz clarinetists who bring a poetic lyricism to the instrument, lacking elsewhere. What's your take on this. It depends where in the south of England you are. If it's the south-east, you might consider taking a day return on the Eurostar to Paris, since new instruments seem to be cheaper here and you have a big choice in the best shops. (Once you have decided on a model, it is always a good idea to try several of the same kind). I'd be happy to look for price lists if it helps.

Since Boosey & Hawkes purchased Buffet in 1986, I believe that B & H has ceased marketing clarinets under the B & H name. You would be able of course to find used B & H horns but not new ones.
