 Moennig Clarinet
Author: Gary

I currently play a resin (plastic) Artley Clarinet, and would classify myself as an intermediate musician. I've recently acquired a Moennig wood Clarinet that is marked on each of the pieces except the mouthpiece (which I believe is a replacement). I need to have it re-padded and tweaked before I play it, but overall it appears to be in good condition.

I have two questions:

1) Since this is my first experience with a wood clarinet, what differences should I be aware of in upkeep from the plastic clarinet?

2) Anyone know anything about the Moennig clarinet? (I couldn't find much info on the web on this manufacturor)

Thanks for any and all of your help!

I'm sure you can do a search on here to find some answers. I've seen some good discussions in the past. Two basics for me. You will need to use bore oil occasionally. Opinions seem to differ on this board as to how often. It may also depend on the climate you live in. Number two would be to avoid temperature extremes with a wood instrument -- don't leave it in a very hot or cold car for several hours without letting it get to room temperature again before you even open the case. Sometimes when I'm playing in air conditioning I warm sections of my horn in my hands when we are not playing.

Enjoy your horn! I love to hear that wood vibrating!

At the top of this page is "Search the Forum". just click that and type in Moening. If I remmember right, they made a decent horn, but I've only seen one in my neck of the woods.

Hi Gary - I have a "simple system" [Military style?] oboe by "Moennig Bros. Germany , Artist Model, with Lyre above" ser no 5016, which I attribute to before 1900, but similar to another oboe by Kohlert of Czech.-Poland ??, with several more keys! I recall having seen an M. clarinet. "They" are not listed as makers by Rendall, but Mark C can and prob. has looked them up in Langwill, Search the Forum! Most of our knowledge re: the M's comes from Hans M., premier repair-tuning-modification particularly of Buffet cl's for symp. musicians!! He was written up in an ICA Journal of about 1983, I dont recall if he discussed his ancestry of woodwind mfgr. and repair. Luck, Don

Moennig woodwinds are still being made and distributed in Europe.

Also, as many of you know, certainly, Moennig makes barrels specifically for Buffet pro line clarinets. THese barrels come complete with the Buffet logo, so there must be some type of cooperative agreement between the two companies.

Many people swear by the Moennig style Buffet barrel.

Moennig in this case refers to a barrel designed by the famous Hans Moennig, a woodwind craftsman of the highest repute. It does not refer to the Moennig company.
