Chicago Symphony giving away it's concerts!

Pretty wild - the CSO has on their site entire concerts (weekly) for free streaming, you don't even have to register to hear it!

Pretty awesome, at the same time I wonder why they are doing that? They could be selling weekly concerts on Itunes like LA does and funding the venture. I'd assume that they have to pay per stream (typically how that works with digital distribution) so it has to cost them $ to do this.

Are any other Orchestras doing the free concert online?

The chicago symphony website doesn't let you do this, but with the NYPO broadcasts, you can record them with Real Player and put them on your iPod. Last night I was listening to the North Korea concert again while cleaning the kitchen lol

I just downloaded it from the CSO site with Realaudio - mine gives me a download link on the page (realaudio plugin)

And here in the US we get to hear most of our symphony orchestras live on the radio or TV, too - I listen to the Detroit, New York, Chicago, and Cleveland Orchestras often, and I'm sure there are more, but there's only so much listening time I have.

But not so many are recorded and placed online for later enjoyment.

Not much on part time classical radio here in Phil so online sites are most valuable. Also being able to put it on my Ipod is great.

Montreal does this. Not with every concert, but Radio Canada has a site where you can hear some of the season's programmes.

Some of the Library of Congress concerts are available on the LoC site as free Podcasts, depending on the LoC's contractual arrangement with the musicians. See the website:

I personally think this is a good idea, as it can give prospective listeners a chance to hear the quality of the performances and will tempt some of them to pony up the price for a few tickets to hear the concerts in all their live glory in the concert hall. Let's face it... FM broadcasts and Internet files don't have quite the same effect as hearing a live performance.

I listen to the Detroit Symphony concerts on the radio, but the quality is never near the actual experience when I pay to visit the DSO in their home at the Max Fisher Center/Orchestra Hall. Or, for that matter, even ourtdoors in the summer at Meadowbrook.

To me, I've been to many Toronto Symphony concerts and sound quality wise if I closed my eyes I could have sworn I was listening to a recording. One concert I saw recently with Charles Dutoit, it didn't seem as if they were really playing because it sounded so much like I was listening to a recording, I almost wanted to go up to one of them and poke them to see if they were really playing. Maybe it's because our technology is so enhanced, but this was the case when I saw an Andre Rieu concert live. The moment I stepped into the "theatre" (it was at a sports arena), it just didn't sound real to me, it sounded like a "synthesized" orchestra.

Has anyone else felt this experience?
