I just got a Vandoren VD3 mouthpiece (that's a German system mp), and it turned out to be harder to play than my old Zinner M3. Admittedly the sound was more pleasing in the clarion register, which is why I bought it.
Comparing the two, I found that the opening is about the same, but the VD3 bends later, so that the free part of the reed is considerably shorter. Clearly, this makes reed appear harder.
Question is, why is this so? Does it affect the tone? Does it provide more control?

Hi Rene - Shorter facings are more resistant than longer ones and favor the clarion register. Also, for a given tip opening, the shorter facing will have more "arch" in the curve which also increases the resistance. It's an interesting trade-off. A similar question turned up here yesterday. Good luck with both mouthpieces!!
