 VesperI Siciliani

Greetings from Vikings territory!

Is the tempo in the Verdi excerpt in this packet correct? I can not find any recording of this specific part.

88 seems awful fast for the Dotted eighth. Is there a chance the 88 refers to the eighth note?

Thanks in advance.

Greg

Should be a bunch of recordings.

That's Sicilian Vespers.

The marking at the top is 84 and definitely refers to the dotted quarter. That's still a brisk tempo, but it lies well. It's absolutely possible if you keep it light.

It's ballet music and has to be athletic. Eighth notes at 84 (or even 88) would be a ballet for tortoises.

Ok, maybe not so easy to find the excerpt but here is your opera:

P.S. Ok I couldn't stand not knowing. The excerpt in the second posted version is at 2:03:12 to 2:04:04. It is actually more like the dotted quarter = 60, and the slurred figure eight before the end is performed here articulated (as marked at six before the end)

Gosh I feel better now.

However, if they specify q.=84 and you play it at q.=60, it could be a problem.

If you watch the Ballet, I think you'd have a lot of sprained ankles if you tried to do it at 84. It's written ink of the part. My thought is that it is just one of those things; convention would rule the day. But then this is part of how opera orchestras are different from concert orchestras - a different set of conventions.
