Does anyone donate clarinates to children?
Author: Jimmy

My stepdaughter loves to play the clarinet but my wife and I cannot afford one for her. I had become disabled from arthritis and lost my job. Now we can't afford her clarinet payments and had to return it. My wife and I feel terrable about this. She was becoming such a good player. Is there an organization that can donate one? Please help. Thank you.

Check with your local VFW, Elks, Masons, etc. and explane the situation. Also local church is a good place to check also. A kid in band isn't hangin' on the corner. Last year I was able to find six old clarinets cheap and donate them to the kids at school who couldn't afford it but I haven"t had much luck this year so far. Keep checking around though. Somewhere, someone has one in their closet that hasn't been played for a while and you just might be able to score it.

Willie's advice about the Masons is right on. My father was a Mason and I know very well that they do a lot of charitable work for which they claim no publicity, pay back or even thanks. All you have to do is ask. By the way........ WAY TO GO Willie!!!! One of those young clarinetists could be the next Larry Combs, Benny Goodman or even Anker Bilk. Music education needs more generous people like you, and so do a lot of young kids who might not otherwise be able to play an instrument simply for lack of money.

Yes, many of us garage-type repairers do so, I donate locally as I discover the $'s need. I will keep track of this thread as to your local success! Don

Jimmy -
Yes, they do. As another 'garage tinkerer' I can say that I (we?) occassionally do gratis fixes (and sometimes donate a horn or two) but don't advertise it. Suggestions and comments above are right on. Please keep us 'posted'.

Brook Mayes has a program @ its local stores. I don't know all the rules & logistics. They work with band directors & teacher.

Try exhausting any/local remedies ... if that doesn't work than report back. A problem with any request like this is *authenticity*.

However, w/many people who own several clarinets (eg collectors, tthose who dabble in resale market or may have a clarinet left over from years past, etc) & many repair people online here, I'll bet something could be arranged if it was strike 3 locally. Good luck. mw
