 Swollen Lip
Author: Ben
Date:   2000-08-20 19:09

My daughter (3rd year of playing) is now developing a swollen upper lip (painful also) after playing. Her band director is baffled. We've tried different types of reeds. Is/has anyone heard of? or experienced this?

Try plastic reeds.

I've also heard of people having reactions to the metal ligature.

Maybe she is putting too much pressure on her lip.

Keith Stein's "The Art of Clarinet Playing" goes into this. He recommends temporary use double lip embouchure as a solution for such problems, since it forces one to bite less. Some clarinetists (including me) use the double lip method all the time, but I've found that some teachers do not even want to hear about it.

Maybe she is allergic to the reed. Sometimes I have the same problem. The conductor of our band (a clarinettist himself) gave me the following tip:

Take a little peace of sand paper and carefully smoothen te reed. (not hard, just a slight touch). Afte that make a little beewax warm, take a very sof cloth and rub the reed with a tiny bit of wax. It helps form me. Sometimes my raction is more havy than another time but when i face this problem I use the wax !

Years ago I had some sort of allergy which would cause [even] non-playing lip swelling, upper mainly. I believe it is what induced me to develop a single-lip embouchure and use a rubber or plastic cushion on the top of the mp for comfort. I still go back and forth in emb. depending on the music character. Luck, Don

i agree with everyone above.. i'm allergic to wooden reeds and use fibracells when i play soprano. i don't generally have trouble with my upper lip, though.. i'd suggest trying a plastic reed and the double emboucher.. it's a bit of an adjustment, but it may make a difference. (remember, though.. plastic reeds have the tendency to produce a shriller sound, at least in my opinion.. just try to find a comfortable way that produces a decent tone)
