I am looking for a wood bass clarinet for daughter to use as second instrument in H.S. and college band. I found a Penzel and Mueller in GREAT shape and wonder if anyone knows of this brand of bass and can help with information. From other threads I have found that the company is no longer in business and they are getting to be vintage instruments... Can anyone help?

Connie - I can't speak to the P-M bass cl, I have an old Full Boehm soprano and have had and worked on several of their last [1950's?] cl's all of which have been quite good. I would guess they had a good French maker [possibly in the US , Pedler, Pruefer, Bettoney] make the bass and "stencil" P-M on it. Does your's have a register key on the neck [double register keying] and/or goes only to low E [not Eb], if so, Conn made some of those in the 40-50's. I'll be happy to help from more info. Don

Connie - I believe Dave Spiegelthal has worked on more bass cl's lately than anyone else I know of. Also John Butler is quite knowledgable in this area. SO, my posting this here is to ask if they can help you, as I've "told you more than what I really know" re: basses. Good luck, Don

Don -- thanks for the plug! Unfortunately I can only disappoint this time. I've never seen a Penzel-Mueller bass clarinet, but if it's as good as their soprano clarinets, then it should be very good indeed. I have no idea if they made it themselves or if it's a 'stencil'. I presume we're all discussing the bass currently on eBay? I looked at the photos, and although it's hard to see much detail, it looks generally like my M. Lacroix bass (which is French-made, a 'stencil' horn of unknown manufacturer). I'm afraid I haven't a clue about the P-M, so please accept my apologies!

Connie, I should have, but didn't, recognize that the BC was on EBAY. Its an education to study all of the listings, to observe the differences, student to pro, and among makers. I should think that bearing the PM logo would date it to 1960 or earlier, my good Selmer, 3/4 th's Full Boehm [no Eb/Bb fork fingering] is about 1970 vintage and is said to be among the best! I would suggest asking for the pics offered, to study its key systems. Don
