I have our school's old (probably 20 years) plastic alto clarinet (that doesn't play well at all), but I've decided to try and get it back into decent shape againg (if that's possible). The inside looks pretty dirty, and the case and the horn don't smell all that great either. The pads are perfectly fine, but I REALLY need to do something about the rest of it. Would it be logical to swab it out with some rubbing alcohol on a cloth and wipe it down? I'm not quite sure how to go about cleaning it.
TIA

For the case, try spraying it with Lysol spray disinfectant and Febreze deoderizer.
For the instrument, try swabbing repeatedly with a LARGE, fairly damp swab. You will probably need to wash the swab and then repeat this whole thing again. The alcohol would be unnecessary if that horn has been sitting for a long time.

For an odiferous [sp?] case, the first step I take is to clean out dirty swabs, old paper etc and put it open in bright sunlight where solar energy and oxygen will do a lot of deodorizing. Then sprays if needed or get a new case! As to the alto, I brush the bore to clear out cobwebs etc and using a cloth swab ,wet as Dee said [or maybe using a low viscosity bore oil as a solvent] swab repeatedly. If that doesnt clear up the bore, I take off all keys and soak it in water with a small amount of detergent [like cleaning a trumpet !]. As Annie {G Y G] said, do what comes nacherly.
