There are recordings out there which are truly nightmares.

The hypothetical ones listed are just goofy. Used to be a radio show devoted to the truly nightmarish classical recordings out there. Lots of vocal "classics".

The citation rekindles the elitists' "knocking" of Fritz Kreisler which was prevalent many years ago. I have no negative comments or feelings about this great violinist....and person, and....don't encourage disparaging anyone's clarinet playing.

David:
What's wrong with goofy?
Bob:
My intention was humor, not disparagement. I apologize if it was misunderstood.

Nothing's wrong with goofy, but when there are truly nightmarish recordings out there, it's more fun to go with the real ones.

William Shatner for instance singing anything....

To me when the big opera stars are singing just about anything except opera (popular tunes, christmas songs) they over enuncate everything and are almost comical to me.

Cass: My comment was directed at the content of the citation....not your post.

O to have heard the Brahms sonatas played by the composer and his muse! Where's my time machine when I need it?

I don't know that I'd care to hear what Sidney Bechet could do with/to Mozart. But Bechet's Stravinsky or Bernstein, now that might be worth hearing.

Nightmare: Benny Goodman playing the Nielsen Concerto, with the snare drummer using brushes ... wait a minute, he already did that. The worst ever. I suppose Acker Bilk and the Nielsen could be worse, but not much.

Oxenvad gave many performances of the Concerto but made no studio recording. There is a false lead in the Clarinet Discography, but Michael Bryant says it's a typo. That would be my dream performance.

Here goes...
Hennie Youngman and Jack Bennie with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra (vintage 1960s) in the pit playing the Bach Double Violin Concerto, while, on stage the New York City Ballet is dancing Ballanchine's Concerto Baroquo dressed in gorilla constumes and diamond tiaras.
