So I really wanted to work on the Brahms trio next semester, but apparently someone in the studio beat me to it. Any suggestions on other pieces that are similar (not necessarily exact instrumentation) to try instead? My prof suggested the Beethoven trio, but I'm just curious about other options as well.

What do you mean by "similar"? The obvious choices are the Brahms sonatas and quintet.
If by "similar" you mean "from around the same time", you might check out the Trio by William Hurlstone (with bassoon & piano), the 8 Trio Pieces by Max Bruch (with viola & piano), and the Quintet by Heinrich von Herzogenberg (with oboe, horn, bassoon, and piano) among what I'm sure are many others.

I am also a big fan of the Bruch Eight Pieces, gorgeous romantic, well crafted pieces. Check out also Bruch's Concerto for viola and clarinet, it's beautiful. The piano reduction for the first two movements works pretty well, however the last movement is more symphonic, and the pianist really needs about 20 fingers to do it justice.

Perhaps try the Alexander Zemlinsky Trio for clarinet, cello, and piano. I enjoy this composition.

The Bruch Eight Pieces make a nice addition to a recital, but performing all 8 of them is usually too much of a good thing.
The last time I performed the Bruch Eight Pieces we chose #1, #6 and #7 and that seemed to be just enough for the audience to appreciate this nice chamber work...GBK
