The Clarinet BBoard

I have purchased an old clarinet at a yard sale and am searching for information to its age and how it should be cleaned. It seems to be made of wood, not like my other 2 clarinets. I have played it and it takes more wind than the others but I assume this may be because it could use new pads and corks. The bell and other pieces are marked JEAN MARTIN PARIS and the numbers are 43959. The mouth piece is HENRI SELMER PARIS and F - made in France. The most unusual part of this is the case. It is stored in a wood, cloth coverd case that has a velvet lining backed and cushioned with straw. It also stores the clarinet in only 2 sections and the mouth piece - unlike my others that store in 4 pieces. Any information would be appreciated.

To me, the ser.# suggests a 40-60's clar. , made by Martin, in an antique case [ I have one for my 1920's Conn C clar. for 2 piece storage, no straw tho!!]. Search the Forum for Martin cl's, and look up the ser# [if its in "How old is my" under Equipment [bottom of BBoard], Don

I concur with Don on the case. It sounds like an early 1900s case. Of course many times the case is lots newer or lots older than the instrument it contains.
Does the clarinet have the standard Boehm key system (i.e. is it like your other two)?
