Just use the ones that work as they come instead of mucking about with them or the dud ones by trying to put some element of life into them (which wasn't there to begin with) and you'll be alright.
If a reed doesn't work, just give up on it instead of wasting time that you could otherwise use more constructively elsewhere. Find the ones that do work and stick with them.
If you're constantly finding you need to sand down your floorboards, just drop down half a reed strength.

They do make good glue spreaders (for use with Evo-Stik) with the tips cut square, or sash window wedges.

Yup, just used one last Saturday when I had to recork a mouthpiece. Whoever fist posted that use deserves a beer.
Only problem - I recork more than I waste reeds. Must practice more...

hello Chris and everyone else who is intrested!
maybe you are lucky enough to afford that kind of waste with reeds. im not!!!
im trying to find a way to prolong the use of them. with the oil amongst other things. is that wrong?
do you have a better idea? or maybe the money to buy me new reeds?
if you think my efforts to a discussion about this here on this bb is wrong of some kind or have evidence that what im trying to find out is totaly out of line, then please tell me, so i doesn't have to waste any more oil! (or for that matter waste my time trying to get help from you guys!)
the reason why i posted it at all is that i needed some guidence and help from you guys who is more experienced than me. isn't that what this is all about?
so if you know that it aint gonna work, just tell me!! (and to quiet down my curiosity, feel free to add why aswell
sorry for answering so harsh, but i think that this *oiling jokes and digs has crossed the line of beeing neither funny, helpful nor polite! one could expect better manners from some of you one this BB!!!

Besides, every reed seems to have a reasonable service life span that appears to be in the 25..35 hours ballpark. This is about as much as those fibers can stand, then they lose their elasticity and the reed first gets tired, then retired. That's how it appears to be working and I've found my inner peace with that fact (and am happy I don't have to pay or work as much as an oboe player).
Re scraping and sanding - wouldn't it be more beneficial to learn how to cope with an okay reed instead of scratching here and sanding there to tickle the optimum for the embouchure du jour, at the expense of practicing time? (And you'll find out that the reed that was great today sounds dull tomorrow). Just like a good cook can make a great meal from what's in the fridge while a mediocre one will complain what's missing. On vacation, I usually only take my least favourite mouthpiece and grab a handful reeds from the bottom drawer, just to learn how to play those. That sounds like The Clarinettist's Way Of Self-Flagellation, but in the long run it makes you worry less about equipment. Most often it's not the reed nor the mouthpiece that makes me a bad player, it's slow fingers, slow tongue and slow reading. And no amount of oiling and sizzling will improve them. Time will, as will practice.

i use old reeds to mix epoxy (after I clean them) ... something i prefer not to use my finger for.
