I know some people own basset clarinets in A in order to re-create Mozart's original concerto and quintet. that may be well justifiable in a cost-benefit analysis.
Does anyone actually own a basset clarinet in Bb in order to play "Parto, parto" from La Clemenza di Tito? or is this such a specialty item that only well endowed opera orchestras own for their players?
I guess the Bb basset clarinet can also be used for the 2nd clarinet in Cosi - but anything else?
thoughts?

When we (National Symphony, Washington) performed La Clemenza with Hogwood, we borrowed a Bb bassett clarinet, owned by the late Marilyn Lauriente, from ('splain me that Lucy) the Hubbard Street Dance Theatre in Chicago! It was a very nice Buffet instrument, and beatifully played by my colleague Paul Cigan.

I had one made for La Clamenza by Steven Fox. I sent him an old Buffet B-flat clarinet and he re-built it. He did a really good job, and it plays at least as well as my Buffet basset clarinet in A.
Now, if only I could afford to buy a basset horn in G to perform the Concerto fragment...

One could use bassett clarinet in B flat for the occasional work which includes a low E flat, such as Berio's Lied.

Howarth in London make Bb basset joints. There are a few of them around. You can play the other Mozart quintet for the Bb basset which he didn't finish. There is some comtempory music for Bb basset.
