I'm so excited I had to share this. My teacher has asked me to play at a workshop. It will be my first time to play a "real" piece. She is going to select some pieces for me and then let me choose from those. The workshop isnt until March so I have plenty of time to work on it.

Congratulations, janlynn. The workshop should be fun for you to do, but the process of preparing for it is probably just as fun and rewarding. Good luck!

Ah, I can hear the strains of Grainger's "Country Gardens" in the mist of my memories.

Who will be taking the workshop? Whatever workshops I've been to (and sometimes played in) theres been a professional or another teacher giving positive feedback and suggestions for improvement. Also other people (clarinet players and otherwise) can have the opportunity to share what they think, It's a great thing. Most helpful to do especially on a regular basis at a music school. Let us know what piece you choose, we'll be able to help! Good luck, 2E.

you know, i didnt "catch" the low-down on what it was all about - i was just excited she asked me. I just know that in order to play in it, your teacher has to be a member of ...something. I just sent her an email asking her to tell me about it again.
I will choose my piece on Saturday. will let you know then.

SO what I found out is that this is more like a recital. It is an association made up of some music teachers in surrounding towns who have private students - mostly piano.
the particular workshop i have been invited to is for adult students only. they found that mixing kids and adults made the adults feel awkward (especially when you have some 5 year old piano prodogy. most likely i will be the only clarinet player. this will be good for me. to build my confidence.

Janlynn,
Check the term andragogy and the work of Malcolm Knowles (one of my heroes). Since most of my university teaching years were spent with a large number of adult learners, the techniques fostered by Knowles and others has always been part of my "refresher training." You may find some fascinating things that apply to your recital/workshop.
Stephen Brookfield is another very fine author. Here is a link to his page. You may want to read the first of the articles he has posted. It may relate to your situation "learning across a lifespan."
